Mud Cat™ Case Studies Two Mud Cat Mud Cat™ Dredges remove biowaste and fiber sludge The Recyclers at the Korsnäs plant The recycling process in brief: Dredging: Two dredges from Mud Cat's Mud Cat™ Division remove biowaste and fiber sludge from sediments in the Korsnäs purification basins. Dredging is operated by NCC Milman.
Fuel preparation: The sludge is spread out on working areas where it is dried by the sun and wind. The sludge is processed when the temperature is above freezing and harvested during the summer months with a dry content of 60-80%. A certain amount of dry material is composted for processing various soil additives. Fuel preparation is operated by Econova.
Ash management: The ash produced during combustion is used as a construction material in the fuel preparation process. The Recyclers’ business concept is to offer a total solution in which various waste products from the forestry industry are processed and refined for subsequent utilization as energy sources for industries and communities.
The Recyclers take complete responsibility for waste product management at the Korsnäs plant. This means that valuable biofuel can be created from waste products that were previously discarded. "It's even cheaper than when we just heaped everything up because the disposal taxes would amount to up to SEK 100 million a year. Outsourcing waste treatment is a good solution for us," says Hans-Gösta Henriksson, environmental engineer at Korsnäs. Recycling facility in operation At the Korsnäs plant The Recyclers produce biofuel and enriched soil from the sludge processors. The Recyclers also handle the ash produced in burning the biofuel in the bark boiler at Korsnäs. So Korsnäs completely avoids the sludge disposal fees that took effect in 2000. By having The Recyclers take over this function, Korsnäs gets access to an environmental improvement process without loading its bottom line with new investment. This meant low financing costs as well as a facility with an optimized operating efficiency and an excellent working environment. The Recyclers cooperated on this project with NCC, Milman, USF Aquaflow, Mud Cat International, Econova, and with Nordbanken Finance for financing.
