 Specifications - "WHEEL DRAGON" Model Series B490


HULL  -  The B490 hull  is three section welded steel construction with ladder well forward, and spud carriage well aft.  Shell plates 3/16" (4.76 mm).  Internal bulkheads 3/16" (4.76 mm).  Built-in hydraulic oil tank, fuel tanks and ballast tanks.  Hull sections are assembled with bottom hooks and deck bolts.  Manhole covers are watertight.  Four lifting lugs for lifting the complete dredge are provided.  Six deck cleats are provided.  Length assembled 56 ft (17.01 m), depth 4 ft (1.22 m), width at stern 12 ft (3.66 m), width at bow 25 ft (7.62 m).
DREDGE PUMP - Dredge pump is an Mud Cat Series 400 pump, 10" (254 mm) suction and 10" (254 mm) discharge.  27" (686 mm) diameter high efficiency impeller with 6" (152 mm) particle clearance, patented expeller vanes and three warped blades, thread mounted. Alloy cast iron (Ni-Hard 4) wearing parts - pump case, impeller and head liners - 500 BHN minimum. Steel side heads. Packed stuffing box with flushing water connection and replaceable 316 stainless steel heavy duty shaft sleeve
for sea and fresh water service.  Heavy duty alloy steel pump shaft with high capacity Timken tapered roller bearings for thrust and radial loads and dual grease purged seals on water end.  Stainless steel oil cooler included.  COG-belt driven by diesel engine.
DIESEL ENGINE - Caterpillar Model 3408 DITA radiator cooled with mechanical multi-plate disconnect clutch and exhaust muffler. Rated 458 SHP (342 kW) continuous at 1800 RPM and 481 SHP (359 kW) intermittent at 1800 RPM (ratings at flywheel).  24 volt DC electric starting with 60 amp alternator and 220 amp-hour batteries. Throttle control operable from lever room. Remote gauges and tachometer in lever room.
SWING WINCHES - Two reversible independent hydraulically driven swing winches - 8,000 pounds (3629 kg) line pull at 75 feet (22.8 m) per minute (first layer).  Rope diameter 1/2" (12.7 mm), 200 ft (61 m) recommended drum capacity. Totally enclosed automatic mooring brake. Single lever control for each winch in lever room.
LADDER HOIST - Double acting hydraulic cylinder with universal fittings for misalignment compensation. Single lever control from lever room.
SPUD HOISTS
- Two independent spud hoist winches with hydraulic motor drive, totally enclosed planetary gearing, totally enclosed holding brakes and freefall clutches.  The holding spud hoist is located on the starboard side of the hull and the working spud hoist is located on the centerline on the traveling spud carriage.  Spuds can be raised, control lowered, or dropped. Each winch is fitted with 1/2 inch (12/7 mm) single part hoist rope attached to lower portion of spuds. Control for each spud hoist is in the control room.
WORKING SPUD TRAVELING MECHANISM - Working spud mounted in traveling spud carriage operated by double acting hydraulic cylinder.  Spud carriage is of steel fabrication supported by renewable shoes that act on rails mounted on the hull. Spud carriage stroke 5 ft (1.52 m) with 18,000 pounds (8165 kg) of holding force. Carriage position indicator is provided in the lever room. Single lever in control room for spud carriage.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM - Tandem hydraulic pump flexibility is coupled to front end of diesel engine.  220 gallon (833 L) reservoir with level gauge and temperature gauge is provided. Individual circuits for excavator, swing and hoist winches and hydraulic cylinders. Single lever control for each function in lever room. Pump protected with suction strainer and return line filter. All circuits protected with relief valves. 
DREDGE PIPING - Suction pipe on ladder and in hull 10" (254 mm) ID X 1/4" (6.35 mm) thick. Discharge pipe on hull (10" (254 mm) ID X 1/4" (6.35 mm) thick. Flanged rubber suction hose provided for flexibility between hull and ladder. Flanged suction cleanout with gasketed cover provided at dredge pump.
SERVICE WATER SYSTEM - Centrifugal service water pump. Belt driven from engine - anti-friction bearings - cast iron construction. Approximately 60 GPM (227 LPM) at 300 ft (92 m) T.D.H. Sea chest with cleanable strainer and shut-off valve is provided.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - 24 volt DC circuit powered from diesel engine starting batteries.
LIGHTING SYSTEM - 24 volt DC lighting system. Two floodlights for aft end, two floodlights for forward end. One dome light in lever room, one light in pump room.
LEVER ROOM & CONTROL PANEL - Removable welded steel lever room with tinted Plexiglas windows all around, and lockable door. Swivel operator's chair with adjustable position. Desk type control panel with fingertip levers for all dredging functions and illuminated dials for night operation. Following instrument controls are included:

SPUDS - Two tubular spuds are provided, 16" (406 mm) square X 0.625" (15.9 mm) minimum wall X 29.13 ft (8.8 m) long. Steel point on lower end, and cap with lifting lug on upper end. Cross tubes for stowing with two cross pins. Fabricated steel spud guides with removable pin connected gates.
DREDGING LADDER - Heavy duty dredging ladder fabricated from structural steel with bolted-on suction pipe for ease of replacement. Approximately 30 ft (9.1 m) long from centerline of trunnion pin to end of excavator. 26 ft (7.9 m) dredging depth at 60° inclination; 21.5 ft (6.5 m) dredging depth at 45° degree inclination. Heavy duty trunnions with removable grease lubricated pins mounted in hull ladder well. Grease lubricated swing sheave blocks for 1/2" (12.7 mm) diameter rope.  60" (1524 mm) diameter dual wheel excavator with:
- 8 blades per wheel with recapable teeth
- 100 HP (75 kW) @ 21.75 RPM maximum wheel speed
- 10,640 pounds (4826 L) cutting force
- 2 submerged, piston-type hydraulic motors
- Submerged, totally enclosed reduction unit with anti-friction bearings, precision chain drive and positive internal oil pressure
SAFETY EQUIPMENT - Safety equipment includes:

PAINTING - The dredge hull shall be painted according to Mud Cat's standard schedule. The hull shall be sandblasted internally and externally to a commercial grade (SSPC-SP-61). All other steel work shall be wire brushed and thoroughly cleaned of loose mill scale, rust, oil, or other foreign matter before painting. The hull shall be given one coat of Carbomastic 15 or equal on the interior and exterior, of 5 mils thickness and an additional coat of Carboline 890 or equal on the exterior, of 5 mils thickness. All fuel compartments shall receive one coat of a fuel oil resistant elastomer coating (minimum thickness 1.0 mils). All other surfaces shall receive a primer coat of 5 mils thickness of Carbomastic 15 or equal and a finish coat of 5 mils thickness of Carboline 890 or equal. The primer coat will be allowed to dry thoroughly before application of the finish coat. Carbomastic 15 is a high solids aluminum epoxy mastic. Carboline 890 is a high solids epoxy polyamide. Colors shall be Mud Cat standards: Hull=blue; House=white; Ladder & Machinery=red; Spuds=black.
SHOP AND FIELD TESTING - The dredge shall be completely assembled in Mud Cat's shop and tested as far as practical under no load or simulated load conditions to insure proper operation. Upon launching and final assembly, the dredge will be fully tested by Mud Cat to insure that all equipment is operating properly.
INSTRUCTION MANUALS - Two sets of manuals shall be provided in the English language, each including the following:
1.  Instructions giving the frequency and specifications for lubrication of the equipment.
2.  Illustrated assembly drawings with part numbers for Mud Cat manufactured equipment.
3.  Parts list and available literature for principal equipment purchased by Mud Cat.
